Asphalt - a harbinger of hope in this region

S. Harpal Singh

There are no bridges at three places where the road crosses local streams

Tough terrain: This motorcade labours to negotiate a difficult stretch of the road in the interior parts of Adilabad’s agency area during Health Minister S. Chandrasekhar’s recent visit.

ADILABAD: Good roads do not just facilitate transportation of men and material. In many areas like in the agency tracts of Adilabad district, the asphalt is also a harbinger of hope.

The need for good road communication was felt more than ever during the current season of tropical illnesses in the tribal villages of Narnoor, Sirpur (U), Jainoor, Utnoor and Indervelli mandals where about 120 deaths have occurred this year. Had roads been better in certain places, some of the precious lives could have been saved.

During Health minister S. Chandrasekhar’s visit to Umri village in Narnoor mandal, villagers pointed it out to his that they could not take their sick to the nearest Primary Health Centre because the road is difficult to travel towards the mandal head quarter. There are no bridges at three places where the road crosses local streams. The count of dead due to tropical fevers at this village is close to 20. In Narnoor itself, the 10 km stretch between Lokari and Gadiguda is totally unmotorable. “Leave alone villagers transporting the patients to a better hospital elsewhere, staff at the Gadiguda Primary Health Centre who stay at other places are reluctant to come here because of the extremely bad condition of the road,” pointed out Banoth Gajanand Naik, sarpanch of Gadiguda. Interior roads are categorised as major district roads and other district roads. It is these roads that need to be repaired, laid anew or bridges built on them urgently. It is also a pity that for proposal for construction of the three bridges linking Umri under the RIAD programme is pending because of confusion about the department to which the road belongs. Work has needlessly suffered due to such confusion.
