Buffalo owners demand dairy outside city limits

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Buffalo owners of the city have approached the Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) Limited for the formation of a cooperative buffalo dairy outside the city limits.

Through this they want to get displaced from the city limits.

Although the buffalo owners of the city are ready to shift out of the city limits, the administration has till date failed to coordinate and make the necessary arrangements for rehabilitation of buffaloes.

On behalf of the Buffalo Breeders and Owners’ Association of the city, its advisers -- Chittaranjan Dash and senior veterinary surgeon B.C. Choudhury -- met OMFED chairman H.K. Panda during his visit to the city. They proposed the OMFED to take initiative and help formation of dairy farm for buffaloes on the outskirts of the city to save city dwellers from buffalo menace.

Shifting sought

The city has around 2,500 buffaloes.

The buffalo owners are demanding to shift their animals outside the city limits since 2003 as increased urbanisation reduced their milk yield. These buffaloes also cause major civic and traffic problems in the city. They also cause a lot of methane pollution. Last year during the visit of the then president, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the city, the buffalo owners had to be requested by the administration to keep their animals outside the city limits for three days.

‘No action’

Mr. Dash alleges that till date the administration has not made any alternative arrangements for rehabilitation of these buffaloes outside the city.

The buffalo owners have already approached the district administration to lease out ten acres of land near the Chandania hill on the outskirts of the city for rehabilitation of these buffaloes. As the administration has till date failed to provide infrastructure for their shifting they decided to approach the OMFED to form milk cooperative outside the city to get shifted out of city limits.
