BHUBANESWAR: In yet another major announcement to appease the agitating teaching community in the State, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced that his government decided to rehabilitate the education volunteers working in rural areas. In a statement in the State Assembly, Mr. Patnaik said the education volunteers under the Education Guarantee Scheme of Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan, who had been disengaged or were facing disengagement, would be rehabilitated as ‘Gana Sikshyaka’. The volunteers, who were trained would be given a consolidated remuneration of Rs. 2,000 per month. Those not trained would get a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 1,750, the Chief Minister said. TrainingThe volunteers with 10th qualification (High School Examination) would have to acquire + 2 qualification within a period of three years from their engagement as Gana Sikshyaka to be considered eligible for C.T. training. Those who were having + 2 minimum qualification would be allowed to complete C.T. training on a distance mode either through IGNOU or the Directorate of Technical Education and State Council for Education Research and Training within a period of three years, Mr. Patnaik said. The engagement of Gana Sikshyakas would be contractual, honorary and would be made and renewed by the Zilla Parishad through the Collector-cum-Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad in each year basing on their performance. “They may be engaged in the government primary schools,” Mr. Patnaik said. ResponsibilitiesHe further said that the Gana Sikshyakas will be responsible for making enrolment drive in the particular institution, check drop-out rate of students, assist regular teachers in teaching work, besides other works as would be entrusted by the Headmaster of the school from time to time. The government’s decision will be effective from the date of the engagement of the education volunteers as Gana Sikshyaka.
