Temple conservation works under way

THANJAVUR: The works on conservation of northern corridors at the Big Temple here (outlay Rs. 65 lakh) and at Sri Airavatesvaraswamy Temple, Darasuram (Rs. 45 lakh) and the outer compound wall at the Sri Brahadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikondacholapuram (Rs. 59 lakh) undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are progressing at a fast pace and will be completed by March 2008.
All these conservation works are being executed retaining their heritage and architectural values, ASI Superintendent Sathyabama Badrinath told presspersons here on Wednesday.
Referring to the conservation works undertaken by the ASI at other heritage sites in the State, Ms. Badrinath said the Vellore Fort outer compound wall was being renovated on an outlay of Rs. 1.55 crore and so was the Namakkal Fort wall.
The Jingee Fort and the Sri Kailasanathar Temple in Kancheepuram were constructed during the same period.
The ASI has recommended that both of them be declared as world heritage sites.
She said steps would be taken for the shifting of the court functioning in the Tirumalai Nayak Palace in Srivilliputhur to enable the launch of conservation works.
Earlier, accompanied by Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar and other officials, she inspected the moat around the Big Temple and discussed with the officials its desilting and renovation.
She discussed the issue of demolishing the toilets block near the Keralanthagan Gopuram parking lot and constructing a new block near the Grand Anicut canal bank.
The ASI will also develop the site in the vicinity of the statue of King Raja Raja Chola outside the Big Temple into an amusement park.
Besides it will acquire the site near the Big Temple where a veterinary dispensary was functioning.
Mr. Vijayaraj Kumar said the State Tourism Department had launched various development works in Thanjavur on an outlay of Rs. 4.27 crore with assistance from the Centre and the State.
Regional Director of Municipal Administration Anwar Badsha and Thanjavur Municipal Commissioner Kanagaraj accompanied the official.
