RTC proposal to hike fares rejected

Chief Minister pulls up executives at high level meeting, seeks fresh action plan

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has again rejected outright, a proposal made by the management of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation to raise fares and pulled up its top executives for not improving their functional efficiency.

Dr. Reddy expressed “dissatisfaction” over the performance of the top executives as they proposed the hike at a high level meeting he convened to review the activities of the RTC at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Rejecting the proposal made by RTC MD V. Dinesh Reddy, he asked him to come back within a week with an action plan envisaging improvement in the functional efficiency of the executives.

Transport Minister K. Lakshminarayana, who spoke to reporters later, said the Chief Minster pulled up the executives for being “not efficient” while “drivers, conductors and others are working hard”.

He wanted them to properly monitor the system.

This was the second time in six months that the Government refused to honour the proposal made by the RTC management. When Mr Dinesh Reddy unveiled the RTC plan to increase the fares sometime ago, it had to be shelved in the initial stage itself following Government’s reluctance.

At that time, the Transport Minister said the Government did not receive any such proposal.
