West Bengal government urged to end action ‘Government trying to duck under ‘Maoist extremism’ KOCHI: A group of about 100 intellectuals and activists has urged the people of Kerala to send relief materials and other aid to the thousands of inhabitants of Nandigram in West Bengal who have been forced out of their homes and villages by the ongoing conflicts. In a statement, they said the violence unleashed in the area by the ruling CPI(M) and the Government on the people who had refused to leave their homes and villages had shocked even pro-Left activists and intellectuals. They recalled that West Bengal’s Governor and the High Court as well as the National Human Rights Commission had openly criticised the Government for the violence. It was deplorable that the West Bengal Government was now trying to duck under ‘Maoist extremism’ for the inexcusable violence and high-handedness. The signatories to the statement wanted the West Bengal Government to end its hostile actions against those who had suffered in the struggle against locating a special economic zone and the violence unleashed by the CPI(M) cadre. The statement urged Keralites to support the agitating people of Nandigram and send them relief materials and aid.
