NEW DELHI: Shocked and grieved over the death of the 21-year-old engineering student whom he considered his “guardian angel”, a young boy allegedly ended his life at Vasant Kunj here on Thursday. Varun Malik, a student of Dronacharya Engineering College in Gurgaon, was shot in the chest from close range allegedly by his friend Moti at Vasant Kunj B-10 Market around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The bullet pierced his body. His friends Nitin and Sachin rushed him to Fortis Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The hospital authorities then informed the police. As the news of Varun’s death reached his house, it stunned not only his family but also 14-year-old Chhotu. About six year ago Varun had spotted Chhotu working at a dhaba and brought him home. Chhotu was treated by the Maliks like a part of the family and Varun even gifted him a bicycle and video games. The Maliks told the police that after Chhotu learnt about Varun’s death, he refused to eat. On Thursday when Varun’s body was taken to the cremation ground, Chhotu stayed back. In the afternoon, a relative discovered his body hanging from the ceiling, following which the police were informed around 2 p.m. Chhotu’s body would be handed over to Varun’s family if no one turns up to claim the body. The police are now searching for Moti, who went missing from the spot after Varun was taken to hospital. Though it is suspected to be a case of accidental fire, Moti’s disappearance has led the police to closely scrutinise his role in the incident. When the police reached his residence, they found his father and brother missing as well. “We are trying to trace him. His questioning is necessary to arrive at any conclusion,” said the police officer.
