Huddling together: Photographing even four old tribals together has become difficult because population of old persons in the tribal community of Adilabad district is on a decline. ADILABAD: There is an apparent decline in the life expectancy of tribals, chiefly among the Gonds and Kolams in Adilabad district, though there are no official or other statistics to provide a definite picture. As is with every aspect of tribal life, statistics are also meagre on the subject as there are hardly any studies in this regard. In the interest of improving all services extended to tribals by the Government, there is a need to study life expectancy and also the impact of dietary changes among tribals. “Persons above the age of 60 years are very scarce these days. Earlier, life without elders in every household was unimaginable,” revealed Thodsam Chandu, a Gond tribal who is the Assistant Project Officer (General) at Utnoor’s Integrated Tribal Development Agency. Mesram Manohar, a Pardhan tribal and vice principal of Utnoor degree college opines that inculcating dietary changes has finished the resistance in tribal body. “Tribals hardly get to eat root tubers like the kehka mati, tondri mati and kirsh mati. Instead of consuming the meat of wild animals, tribals eat poultry chicken these days,” he pointed out. Food consumption“The concept of well fed, in tribal ethos meant, consumption of food from locally available range. The root tubers were excellent source of carbohydrates and vegetables were grown in the backyards. Plenty of fruits were available in the jungles too. Though carbohydrates are available in rice, the system of tribals seems to be taking time to adjust to it,” added Chandu. In addition, consumption of gutka and alcohol has also taken its toll. People who are addicts do not last more than half a century. “Epidemics are a recent phenomenon in the agency areas here. People are unable to counter the effects of seasonal diseases obviously because of low resistance,” said Manohar.
