Criminals on the run in West Zone

Police are tracing these bail jumpers, absconding criminals and habitual offenders, says R. Ilangovan

Rowdy elements and history-sheeters are on the run in West Zone. Police are on their trail tracing these bail jumpers, absconding criminals and habitual offenders.

Pending warrants have been taken up and special teams are fanning out to different parts of the zone to bring these elusive criminals before law.

This drive against rowdies in West Zone till date has netted a staggering 1200 criminals of whom 500 are petty ones. Separate case histories and charge sheets on each criminal are being prepared. These records will also serve as dossiers on these criminals and enable police in future as reference materials.

In fact on instructions from Zone’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rajendiran, special cells have been established in all offices of Superintendents of Police in the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode and Udhagamandalam to deal exclusively the rowdy elements.

The night patrolling under the guidance of senior officers has been intensified in all 240 police stations in the Zone. Fifty special squads also have been formed.

In continuation of the exercise, Salem DIG N. Chenbaharaman recently convened a special meeting for SPs in Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts.

He told them to ensure that the districts were incident-free and wanted them to intensify the raids against bootleggers to ensure the total eradication of illicit brew, which despite sustained drive, continues to flow in deep rural areas.

The DIG asked them to complete the pending cases immediately. The drive against rowdies in these four districts netted nearly 100 offenders of whom many were hardcore criminals. All of them had been charge-sheeted and remanded to custody.

The drive against rowdy elements, officials claim, will continue in the days to come. “All of them will be apprehended in a week or two,” says a senior police official in the district.
