UGC admits circular was an error, says JNUSU
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission has “admitted” that a circular declaring a bar on any fresh disbursal of Rs.3,000/Rs.5,000 fellowships for research scholars of Central universities was “an error” and that it would send a fresh notification to all universities amending its earlier order, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union claimed on Thursday.
“The UGC gave a significant retraction, admitting that the earlier circular was an error. It would also send a fresh circular to all universities by Monday amending its earlier order and categorically stating that the Rs. 3,000/Rs.5,000 fellowships would not be stalled,” said JNUSU president Sandeep Singh after meeting UGC Chairman Sukhdeo Thorat and his team. On JNUSU’s demand that the cut-off date for disbursal of these fellowships be July 2005, the UGC “failed to give any response”.
“With regard to the delays in the disbursal of the Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship for SC/ ST research scholars, the UGC stated that since the fund for this fellowship is provided by the Ministry of Social Justice and Ministry of Tribal Affairs, it would write to them immediately. It assured that all the problems would be resolved in three weeks,” Sandeep said.
