CPI(M) favours discussions to settle Palar check dam issue

Special Correspondent

“Agitations by political parties will only lead to confrontation”

VELLORE: The Vellore District Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxists) has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to bring Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to the negotiating table for talks to solve the issue of a check dam across the Palar in Kuppam constituency in the first week of December.

In a statement, A. Narayanan, Vellore district secretary of the CPI (M), said that the construction of a dam by Andhra Pradesh would prevent the flow of water to the portion of the Palar passing through Vellore, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and a part of Chennai district. This would jeopardise the livelihood of farmers and also deplete groundwater level. Agitations by political parties on this issue would only lead to confrontation between the people of the two States.

So, the political parties should give up agitations, Mr. Narayanan said.
