KASARAGOD: The Kasaragod Railway Passengers Association has demanded that the passenger trains in the State that start from Kannur should begin from Mangalore to help commuters of Kasaragod. Association general secretary R. Prasanth Kumar said though they had convinced top railway officials on the need to begin passenger trains to Kerala from Mangalore no such train had been started. The association said they had every reason to believe that a section of railway officials was subverting proposals to start passenger trains from Mangalore to Kerala. Mr. Kumar pointed out that the Union Railway Minister for State had announced the starting of a passenger train to Kerala from Mangalore in 2004, but that had not been implemented. The passengers association demanded construction of a roof for the railway platform here, appointment of staff well versed in Malayalam, Kannada and English at ticket counters and information centre at Kasaragod railway station. They also demanded proper lighting of railway station platform and premises. The association leaders said they had submitted a memorandum containing their demands to Palakkad divisional railway manager A.K. Harith who visited the station recently.
