MALAPPURAM: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State president Panakkad Sayed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal has described the victory of the IUML and its student wing Muslim Students Federation (MSF) in the recent by-elections and college union elections respectively as signals of a great change. The IUML had inflicted the CPI(M) a stunning defeat in the by-elections to four divisions of civic bodies in the district last week. Similarly, the MSF emerged victorious in 17 of the 19 colleges in the district where elections were held on Thursday. Addressing a news conference at his Kodappanakkal house near here on Friday, Mr. Shihab said that his party had fared better in all by-elections held after the last Assembly polls in the district. He said the victory of the MSF candidates in government colleges was a notable achievement for the youth wing of the party. “These victories once again have confirmed the fact that Malappuram is the bastion of the Muslim League,” the IUML leader said. He was accompanied by IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty. The IUML leaders said that people had realised that the United Democratic Front (UDF), of which the IUML is a constituent, was working for the development of the State. They said the party would approach the masses with the message of change and prosperity. Beginning Friday, the party would launch a month-long campaign to strengthen its base, they said. From January, the IUML would launch a separate campaign to highlight the failures of the LDF government.
