East Godavari district registers less number of

HIV positive

cases this year

Kakinada: The East Godavari district, which ranked second in Andhra Pradesh in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, has registered lesser number of HIV positive cases this year.

Of the total number of 1,05,502 persons tested for HIV, 7,870 (7.45 per cent) were found to be positive. It was 8.83 percent in 2006-07, 10.3 per cent in 2005-06 and 11.15 per cent in 2004-05.

This suggests that the AP State AIDS Control Society has achieved better control of the syndrome that has of late assumed epidemic proportions.

Addressing media persons here on Friday on the eve of the World AIDS Day, District AIDS Control Officer M. Pavan Kumar said that the district stood 8th in the prevalence of anti-natal cases of HIV (1.75 per cent) as per the Sentinel Surveillance Data, 2006. As per the data available from government hospitals, there are three HIV positive cases for every 200 pregnant women in the district. The prevalence rate in Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centres (VCTCs) is about 16.55 per cent. The positivity rate of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS came down from 3.17 per cent last year to 1.36 per cent. The district has 45 HIV testing centres and one Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) centre in the Government General Hospital at Kakinada.

To mark the World AIDS Day on Saturday, Mr. Kumar said that district Collector M. Subrahmanyam would have breakfast with HIV positive children at his bungalow. A rally would be taken and public meeting organised later. The theme is ‘Stop AIDS. Keep the promise - Leadership’.
