Chitradurga: A sum of Rs. 31 lakh has been released in the first phase under a project of the Union Government to rehabilitate farmers in the district. Disclosing this at the taluk panchayat meeting here on Friday, an official of the Fisheries Department said that Rs. 1.35 crore had been earmarked for the three-year project. The rest of the amount would be released in the next two years, he said. Under the project, a farmer can take up fish breeding in his fields by constructing a pond on an area of 2.5 acres at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 lakh, for which 50 per cent subsidy will be given for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 40 per cent for other beneficiaries. A subsidy of Rs. 15,000 will be given towards input cost for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Rs. 12,000 for others. On the progress of Akshara Dasoha, the official said that the Government would provide Rs. 3,500 to each school that had sufficient land for cultivating vegetables on its premises for the mid-day meal scheme. The department had identified 60 such schools in the taluk for financial assistance for vegetable farming, he said. Vice-president Deepa Vijay Kumar and executive officer N. Lingaraj were present.
