New project: Delhi Lt.-Governor Tejendra Khanna flanked by Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal and State Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit during the signing of an agreement between the Delhi Government and Survey of India on Friday for 3D GIS imaging. NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna on Friday said a record of urban properties based on geo-spatial data would be helpful in future planning and serve as a useful tool for managing the current urban problems. Mr. Khanna was speaking at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research headquarters here on the occasion of the launch of the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure project. “The project will update ownership records and create a comprehensive land information system to bring transparency to the system. With the availability of digital urban property records, property disputes could be possibly sorted out and anyone could obtain correct information,” he said. ‘Monitor encroachments’Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said this project would help government agencies in effectively monitoring encroachments, managing traffic and co-ordinating relief work in the event of any disaster. Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said the project was an outcome of a pilot project by the Central Department of Science and Technology. “If Delhi is to be made a world-class city, it can be accomplished by empowering people with a geo-spatial data project,” he added. Green buildingMs. Dikshit also inaugurated the Development Alternatives headquarters building which is the first institutional building in India with zero emissions and 100 per cent carbon neutrality. The building is a model for commercially viable and environment friendly technologies for all urban constructions in the country. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit described Development Alternatives as the “torchbearer in promoting environmentally friendly sustainable development across India”. “It is therefore no surprise that the organisation has demonstrated the highest standards in this category. Delhi is proud to host this building and it should become a model for commercial and residential construction in the capital. I hope there will be several such structures using alternative eco-friendly methods and technology,” she added. According to Ms. Dikshit, this example would lead to a serious rethink by the corporate sector and individuals to use green and eco-friendly techniques and materials for construction and to also implement the green building managerial practices for conservation of nature.
