BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed as withdrawn a petition for bail by a woman from Chikmagalur who is one of the accused by the city police in the Chemmanur jewellery heist. A resident of Koppa in Chikmagalur district, Hema alias Hemalatha claimed that she was implicated by the Bangalore police in the case and that she was not at all involved in any such incident. She said she was arrayed as the 10th accused by the Banaswadi police in the dacoity case. The police, she said, had arrested her alleging that she had received stolen ornaments and kept them in her house in Koppa. She said she was innocent of the crime and that the police had arrested her only because her brother Gopala Shetty was a suspect. She had urged the High Court to release her on bail, saying that she had to take care of her child. Opposing the bail plea, the public prosecutor said the police had arrested Hema on September 5 and recovered more than 100 stolen articles, including 22 gold necklaces, 12 gold bracelets, 13 gold anklets, 27 gold chains, seven karimani chains, 12 earrings, 14 gold pendants and 13 damaged gold ornaments apart from a mobile phone from her house. He said the charge-sheet in the case too had been filed. He said Hema’s earlier application for bail before the Fast Track Court-3, Mayo Hall, Bangalore, was rejected on October 24. Hema then sought permission from the court to withdraw her bail plea. Justice Subash B. Adi dismissed the bail petition as withdrawn.
