Permit RTC to buy buses: SWF

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Staff and Workers Federation (SWF) of the APSRTC, affiliated to the CITU, on Friday demanded that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy permit the corporation to buy new buses.

In a press release, SWF president M.N. Reddy and general secretary R. Lakshmaiah said that at last count, at least 6,000 buses of the corporation’s 18,000-odd-strong fleet needed to be replaced.

The management had initially planned on procuring about 2,000 new buses in the current fiscal and had even placed orders for 1,000.

Lauded

Mr. Lakshmaiah referred to Thursday’s meeting, at which Dr. Reddy had lauded the workers for their efforts in turning the corporation around.

They said that they did not need appreciation but concrete steps that would help improve the lot of workers.

Mr. Lakshmaiah expressed concern over the suicide of a worker in Tuni depot in East Godavari district on November 21 and said thus far 15 workers had taken their lives.
