Chennai: The number of new tenements for the tsunami-affected residents of Nochikuppam and Srinivasapuram may go down from the originally planned 7,230 to about 7,000 in order to make space for road expansion work.
The housing project, estimated to cost Rs.138 crore, is already delayed, as the number of claimants to the allotments exceeds the number of apartments proposed. Faced with stiff resistance from residents, the Chennai Collectorate has been unable to finalise the list of allottees in this belt. Funds for this World Bank aided project were released in March 2007.
Minister for Slum Clearance Suba Thangavelan on Thursday said revenue officials had recently been able to make a breakthrough and survey the area. The list would be ready soon. He said the number of houses initially proposed had to be brought down by at least 200 as road expansion works were to be carried out near the Lighthouse.
Under the State Government’s scheme to present sale deeds to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) allottees, 150 residents of various parts of Chennai were given documents on Thursday.
After handing over the sale deeds, Mr. Thangavelan told reporters that so far, 12,000 people in Chennai and 2,420 people in other urban areas of the State had been issued sale deeds.
The scheme would cover 3,000 more people by December 31.
About 70,700 sale deeds still need to be issued to allottees across Tamil Nadu, according to TNSCB data. The backlog was caused by difficulties in paying for and getting the land transferred to the TNSCB from other government agencies such as civic bodies or the Railways, Mr. Thangavelan said.
“Since 1973, the TNSCB has constructed 86,300 housing units. During this financial year alone, the Board will start construction of 52,231 units,” Mr. Thangavelan said. Funds for these houses would be drawn from various sources, including the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
