VISAKHAPATNAM: Officials, particularly of the engineering wing who are dealing with works in the Visakha agency area were given a dressing down by Minister for Tribal Welfare D. Redya Naik while reviewing development works being taken up for Girijans here on Friday. He wanted an engineer of the Panchayati Raj Department suspended for not using proper material while laying a road and to frame charges against District Tribal Welfare Officer Rama Seshu for not taking steps to improve facilities at the Tribal Welfare Hostel for Boys in spite of being told to so by the Collector. Mr. Redya Naik was angry that there was a huge gap between what the engineering officials had claimed and the work, which was actually executed. During the last review meeting the Minister wanted works to be done according to sc*hedule and also got the funds released and he found little progress since then. When Chintapalli MLA G. Demudu complained that the road near Kondavanchi in Koyyru mandal was completely damaged as the required material was not used, Mr. Redya Naik wanted the engineer concerned of the Panchayati Raj Department to be suspended. No dearth of funds“There is no dearth of funds. All works must be completed by December end and I will spend two days here and review again”, he said and added that he would also inspect the work if necessary. When the construction of building of the Government Junior College in Araku Valley came up, he pulled up the engineers for not calling tenders and for dividing works, which he felt was to help the contractors. The engineering staff could not provide a proper reply. The engineering officials could not also give a proper explanation when Mr. Redya Naik reviewed the roads sanctioned with NABARD assistance. Work on four roads could not be started as they were in CPI (Maoist)-influenced areas, said the engineers but when Mr. Redya Naik wanted to know the progress of work in other areas, they could not explain. While discussing health care, the Minister was not happy that some PHCs in the agency area were without doctors. Some doctors got themselves posted in the agency PHCs and were going on leave. Mr. Redya Naik wanted at least one doctor to be present in a PHC. Mr. Redya Naik also termed the SFI and ASFI activists as paid workers. Collector A.K. Singhal was also present.
