dated December 1, 1957: Hydrogen bomb test

Britain’s fourth Hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific on November 8 was felt as a series of terrific blasts on Fanning Island, 155 miles away, according to reports belatedly reaching Melbourne on November 29. The blasts rocked the island for about 15 minutes, according to the first reports since the official announcement by the British Ministry of Supply that the test had taken place. A heavy rumbling on the Eastern horizon was followed by a minor shock wave.
