Outrageous

I was shocked to read about the assault on an Adivasi girl, who was part of the rally agitating for the inclusion of the Santal Adivasis and the Tea Tribes in the list of Scheduled Tribes, by some local residents of Guwahati. Stripping her was a brazen act of outrage and is a blot on our collective consciousness.

That the Adivasi protesters went on the rampage was no reason to act in such a heinous manner. The incident in a country that treats women as god makes us hang our heads in shame.

The attack on the Adivasi woman was outrageously inhuman and condemnable. However, terms such as ‘helpless Adivasis’ and ‘growing intolerance of marginalised sections’ (Letters, Nov. 29) are exaggerated. The Adivasis who took out a rally on Saturday went on the rampage, vandalising shops and business establishments while exercising their ‘democratic right’ to protest.

All tribals are not marginalised, especially in the northeast where a large section of the population is tribal and enjoys constitutional protection. The retaliation by the locals is rooted both in provocation and pent-up anger against tribal groups. The non-tribal Assamese community does not have rights in tribal areas. One wonders which is the marginalised section.

Pritam Baruah,

New Delhi
