News Analysis
In an article “Explaining the non-deal with Russia” (Editorial page, November 30, 2007), the eighth paragraph was: “Mr. Putin was asked a pointed question during an interview he gave to Doordarshan and PTI on the eve of his India visit: … We take our own decisions, in agreement with our Indian friends, on what to do or not to do, I repeat, while observing our international observations (emphasis added).” It should have been “international obligations”. The blurb of an article “Sweet as sugarcane” (Tamil Nadu and Chennai editions, The Hindu-Friday Review, November 30, 2007, page 3) was: “Tribute: Totally devoted to guru Palghat Mani Iyer, Vembu Iyer seldom performed alone.” Vembu Iyer’s guru was Madurai Mani Iyer, as mentioned in the text. Because of the large number of reader reactions, this correction finds a place here and not in the Friday Review. The third paragraph in a report “Engine online rapid loading system inaugurated” (Andhra Pradesh edition – Bangalore, November 30, 2007, page 8) was: “To load the 58 rakes with coal it takes five hours in the old system while for the new system it took only 2 hours.” It should have been “58-wagon rakes”, as a rake is a formation of a number of carriages or wagons.
A sentence in the fourth paragraph of a PTI report “Sreesanth’s aggression may cost India: Symonds” (“Sport”, November 28, 2007) was: “But, as I said, he’s just got hite-line fever and, sometimes, he just loses control.” It should have been “white-line fever”, as mentioned in the third paragraph. The Sports Desk clarifies that white-line is the boundary line. What Australia’s Andrew Symonds meant was that Sreesanth becomes a different person when he enters the ground. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
