BSP to contest all seats in J&K

Luv Puri

JAMMU: The Bahujan Samaj Party will contest all 87 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

BSP State president Yash Pal Bhagat told The Hindu on Friday that the party had devised a strategy to appeal to different caste and ethnic groups.

The BSP’s principal appeal is among the Bhagat sub-caste of Dalits, who mostly live along the India-Pakistan border. It is also targeting other groups such as Gujjars and Bakerwals, who have been given Scheduled Tribe status.

In the 1996 elections, the BSP, which had a tie-up with the National Conference, contested in 41 seats. It won in four seats. In the 2002 elections, the party contested in 35 constituencies and won in only one seat, thanks to dissension.
