NEW DELHI: Members in both Houses of Parliament on Friday made a demand for speedy implementation of the Sachar Committee recommendations to uplift the economic status of Muslims. CPI(M) leader Mohammad Salim wanted to know when the report would be implemented as a Group of Ministers, a Committee of Secretaries and expert panels had already gone into the matter. He said affirmative actions, as promised by the government, was yet to be taken. Even as the CPI (M) raised the Sachar Committee issue during zero hour, BJP members led by Deputy Leader V. K. Malhotra voiced their opposition and said they were “dissociating” themselves from it. However, Mr. Salim’s demand found support in other sections, including the Congress. Devendra Prasad Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal supported Mr. Salim, said the issue involved almost 15 per cent of the country’s population. In the Rajya Sabha, Ali Anwar Janata Dal (United) said though the Sachar report was tabled in Parliament a year ago, there was no debate on it. Similar was the fate of the Ranganath Misra Commission report on the condition of religious and linguistic minorities, he said during zero hour. Muslims and Dalits were in a pitiable condition. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri said the government was ready to discuss the Sachar report and it was for the Chair to decide the timing and the rules under which the discussion could be taken up.
