Eduardo is JCT’s hero

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Eduardo Escobar Da Silva’s hat-trick, the season’s first, helped JCT beat Kingfisher East Bengal 3-1 in the ONGC I-League second round game at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Friday.

The Phagwara-based mill men emerged victorious against the local side for the second win in as many matches to join defending champion Dempo SC with six points at the top of the table. East Bengal, which had beaten Viva Kerala 2-0 in the previous game, tasted its first loss in the professional league.

It was no mean achievement for JCT and these two victories would do a world of good for the Punjab’s lone challenger.

Not that East Bengal played badly. It was Eduardo’s sheer opportunism that translated the 50-50 game into JCT’s favour. East Bengal defence did not look that solid. Madhab Das was given the most unenviable task of policing Eduardo and the defender failed to raise his game to nullify the Brazilian’s moves.

East Bengal fielded two foreigners in Majek Bolaji in the defence and Edmilson Marques in the upfront. While the former failed to give a good account of his ability, the latter, except the penalty conversion, did not do much.

East Bengal would surely rue wasting some good scoring openings where every East Bengal forward had his share. For almost 40 minutes, the two teams kept probing the rival defence before JCT broke the deadlock.

Marcos Pereira’s freekick in the 43rd minute gave Eduardo the opportunity to use his head for the opening goal.

East Bengal equalised through Edmilson’s spot kick conversion five minutes inside the second half.

Thereafter, Eduardo struck twice in the 68th minute heading home another Marcos floater from the flank.

He completed the hat-trick in the 82nd minute after Sunil Chhetri forward pass enabled the Brazilian to dodge past Madhab Das and slot it home.
