Haryana wins title

Principal Correspondent

GURGAON: Tushar Chaudhary’s 19th minute strike carried Haryana to its maiden title triumph at the 44th Junior National football championship for the Dr. B.C. Roy Trophy at the Devi Lal Sports Stadium here on Friday.

Making it to the final itself was a big achievement for Haryana. The frontline combination — Akash Dutt, Tushar, Suprasun Samanta and Manandeep — showed exemplary ball skills and attacked right from the start. The Bengal defence, though solid, cracked just once.

Bengal looked more balanced side but Haryana proved it otherwise.

Tushar put Haryana in lead, collecting the loose ball following a melee in the midfield.

On changing ends, Bengal tried to break into the Haryana defence but defender Amla Francis Nova stood like a wall.

In the 72nd minute, Bengal goalkeeper Sayan Roy saved Samanta’s powerful left-footer that looked destined to find the net. Bengal counterattacked through Surojit Sardar, but goalkeeper Pardeep foiled the move. The State Government announced Rs. 5 lakh cash prize to the winner. Another Rs. 2 lakh came from the Gurgaon District Football Association, something that the group of youngsters never dreamt of.
