Apoorva-Nirmala triumph

KOCHI: LIC’s S. Apoorva and P. Nirmala, the World No. 1 and 2 respectively, bagged the women’s doubles title in the ninth National inter-institutional carrom championship at the Regional Sports Centre here on Friday.

Indian Airlines’ internationals A. Maria Irudayam and E. Magimairaj won the men’s doubles honours, beating their teammates R.M. Shankara and M. Nataraj in straight sets.

The results: Men’s doubles final: A. Maria Irudayam & E. Magimairaj (IA) bt R.M. Shankara & M. Nataraj (IA) 25-9, 25-6. Semifinals: Maria Irudayam & E. Magimairaj bt Yogesh Pardesi & K. Ramesh Babu (PSPB) 25-17, 20-25, 25-0; R.M. Shankara & M. Nataraj bt Sandeep Deourakar & Ashok Gour (PSPB) 24-25, 25-2, 25-10.

Women’s doubles final: S. Apoorwa & P. Nirmala (LIC) bt Reshmi Kumari/Bhanudas (BSNL) 25-24, 25-4. Semifinals: Apoorwa & Nirmala bt R. Sharmila & D. Swarnalatha (IAAD) 25-15, 25-24; Reshmi & Bhanudas bt G. Revathy & D. Yuvarani (BSB) 11-25, 25-7, 25-23.

Don Bosco wins again

At Kottayam, Don Bosco HSS (Irinjalakuda) scored comfortable wins over Krithu Jyothi HSS and Mar Thomas HSS in the Girideepam all-India inter-school basketball tournament at the Girideepam floodlit court on Friday.

In volleyball, host Girideepam and G.V. Raja Sports School recorded straight set wins over St. Joseph HSS (Pulincunnu) and SN Vidhya Bhavan (Chandrapanny) respectively.

Arun Lal scores winner

Arun Lal scored the match-winner as LNCPE (Thiruvananthapuram) defeated host Union College and entered the men’s semifinals of the 16th Dr A.K. Baby South India inter-collegiate hockey tournament at Aluva on Friday evening.
