Palakkad girls make history

KOTTAYAM: Palakkad won the girls’ kho-kho title for a record sixth year in succession on the opening day of the 51st Kerala School Games here on Friday.

Thiruvananthapuram boys also recorded a similar feat, winning the tennis title, but what made Palakkad’s win in kho-kho special was the ease with which it sailed through .

Drawn directly into the semifinals, Palakkad hardly broke sweat as it got past Malappuram by an innings and two points before trouncing Thrissur by turn and 10 points.

Palakkad also won the boys’ title for the event with a 2-point win over Malappuram.

Double for Kannur

Kannur too finished with a memorable double in handball. In the boys’ section, Kannur defeated Kottayam 12-10, while in the girls’ division, it defeated Kasaragod 14-12.

Palakkad is in line for another double, as its boys’ and girls teams will figure in the hockey finals on Saturday.

In the semifinals, Palakkad boys overcame Kottayam 1-0 to set up a clash with Malappuram, a 2-1 winner against Kannur. Palakkad girls entered the title-round with a 1-0 win over Kannur.

Palakkad again

In ball badminton, the final line-up for girls also figures Palakkad once again. Having defeated Thrissur 29-20, 29-15, Palakkad will meet Alappuzha which defeated Thiruvananthapuram 29-25, 29-16.

In the boys’ section, the finalists are Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha, having defeated Palakkad (29-26, 29-6) and Thrissur (28-29, 29-24, 29-17) respectively.

The results (under-17 section):

Boys: Kho-kho (final): Palakkad bt Malappuram by 2 points. Losers’ final: Thiruvananthapuram bt Kannur by 1 point and two minutes.

Kabaddi (final): Thrissur bt Thiruvananthapuram 53-50. Losers’ final: Palakkad bt Ernakulam 5-26.

Handball (final): Kannur bt Kottayam 12-10. Losers’ final: Thiruvananthapuram bt Thrissur 12-7.

Hockey (Losers final): Kannur bt Kottayam 2-0. Semifinals: Palakkad bt Kottayam 1-0; Malappuram bt Kannur 2-1.

Ball badminton (semifinals): Thiruvananthapuram bt Palakkad 29-26, 29-6; Alappuzha bt Thrissur 28-29, 29-24, 29-17.

Girls: Kho-kho (final): Palakkad bt Thrissur by a turn and 10 points. Losers’ final: Malappuram bt Thiruvananthapuram by 4 points.

Kabaddi (final): Kottayam bt Alappuzha 47-22. Losers’ final: Thrissur bt Kasaragod 46-26.

Handball (final): Kanur bt Kasaragod 14-12. Losers’ final: Kottayam bt Thiruvananthapuram 6-0.

Hockey (Losers’ final): Kannur bt Thiruvananthapuram 1-0. Semifinals: Thrissur bt Thiruvananthapuram 4-1; Palakkad bt Kannur 1-0.

Ball badminton (Losers’ final): Thiruvananthapuram bt Thrissur 29-24, 21-29, 29-27. Semifinals: Palakkad bt Thrissur 29-20, 29-15; Alappuzha bt Thiruvananthapuram 29-25, 29-16.
