Big turnout likely for Bangalore Marathon

BANGALORE: The Bangalore International Marathon, recognised by the Athletics Federation of India and sponsored by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., is set for a December 16 flag-off.

The event, conducted by the Karnataka Athletics Association with the support from the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), carries a prize money of $25,000 with additional bonus for world record feats in the full and half-marathon.

The event is expected to attract more than 20,000 participants, including runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, UK, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Charity run

While the full marathon (42.195km) and the half-marathon (21.097km) will be the main events, the charity run or the Dream Team Run (5km), the Senior Citizen Run (5km) and the Wheelchair event (2km) will also be held alongside.

The full marathon, half-marathon and the charity run will all have an entry fee of Rs. 100. To train and guide participants, the organisers will conduct training from December 5 to 15.

Cancer Patients Aid Association, Parikrama Foundation (educating under-privileged), AIIMS (street children) and sport welfare will benefit from the funds raised through this event.

Celebrities expected

Celebrities and former sports personalities like Prakash Padukone, P.T. Usha, Anju Bobby George, Ashwini Nachappa, S.D. Eashan, Arjun Devaiah, Archana Vishwanath, Sriram Singh and Nisha Millet too are expected to participate in the event.

Basketball camp

J.D. Walsh, the renowned basketball trainer from New York, will be conducting an eight-day residential camp at the Jain Academy of Sporting Excellence here from December 3.

About 40 wards of JASE, Jain Vidyaniketan and SBMJ College of Engineering would attend the camp. The J.D. Walsh Basketball School and JASE plan to have a regular tie–up for short term clinics and exchange programme.

Inter-school cricket

The KSCA Dharwad Zone under-17 inter-school league cricket matches will be held from December 5 to 26 in Hubli and Dharwad. Twenty teams will play in the league.
