People told to involve in development of villages

9,700 self-help groups inaugurated in Chikmagalur district

CHIKMAGALUR: D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, said here on Thursday that the development of our country depended on the prosperity of its villages.

Inaugurating over 9,700 self-help groups constituted under the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project in Chikmagalur district, Mr. Heggade called upon the people to involve themselves in the development of their village instead of depending solely on the Government.

Blaming the supply of spurious seeds, fertilizers and pesticides as well as uncertain prices for agricultural produce as the main reasons for farmers’ suicides, he urged farmers to carry out timely agricultural practices to ensure good returns.

Stressing the need to inculcate discipline and commitment to succeed in life, he said his institution had advanced Rs. 320 crore to the economically weaker sections in the State.

Stating that the institution considered the self-help groups as its partners in progress, he promised that all facilities including those provided by the Government would be made available to them.

D.C. Srikantappa, MP, presided over the function. D.B. Chandre Gowda and B.B. Ningaiah, former Ministers; and C.T. Ravi and M.P. Kumaraswamy, former MLAs; spoke.

K. Sundar Naik, zilla panchayat chief executive officer; Chandramma Manjunath, zilla panchayat president; and Kamalamma Halappa, taluk panchayat president, were among those present.

L.H. Manjunath, executive director of the rural development project, welcomed.

Jayaram Nellithaya, director, proposed a vote of thanks.
