Bidders quote Rs. 30 crore for pipelines against estimated Rs.25 crore

COSTLY AFFAIR: D. Mahendran, Assistant Executive Engineer, explaining the revised estimate on Friday.
PUDUKOTTAI: The estimated cost for an underground drainage scheme for Pudukottai town has escalated due to time overrun, Pudukottai Municipal council was told here on Friday.
Addressing councillors at the monthly meeting, Assistant Executive Engineer from Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board B. Mahendran said that the original estimate of Rs.32.16 crore approved a couple of years ago, comprised two components – laying the underground drainage pipelines at a cost of Rs. 25 crore and the balance for the sewage treatment plant.
However, the tenders called for setting up the sewage pipelines had been quoted at Rs.30 crore, requiring the concurrence of the municipal council. He said that 30 per cent of the expenditure would be sanctioned as grant by the State Government and 37 per cent as loan component while the municipality should contribute the balance 33 per cent.
He requested the councillors to accord their concurrence for the revised estimate to expedite the scheme execution.
Two councillors, M. Karnan and Babu, pointed out that the erstwhile Pudukottai Samasthanam had designed a special drainage system for a major part of the town spread over about 29 municipal wards. The old drainage system had been designed to let off the sewage water at the backyard, they said asking whether this aspect had been taken into consideration by the Project Estimation Unit of the TWAD Board.
Mr. Mahendran said the revised estimates would be brought before a special meeting of the council.
Earlier, AIADMK councillors S.K. Kumar, Karuppiah, Aiyappan and K. Marimuthu came to the council carrying a candle each, protesting against the frequent power failures in the town. Kannan (DMDK) came with a burning torch. M. Mohan (Congress), wearing a mosquito net, protested the ‘lethargy’ of the municipality in controlling the mosquito menace in the town.
