JAIPUR: It is a question of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan losing ground to its main rival, the Congress. On the eve of the mega fourth anniversary celebrations planned by the BJP here in early December, the Congress has bagged the very venue the party had earmarked for holding its celebrations. The situation has led to considerable discomfiture among the ruling party leadership even as they get ready for the show of strength, scheduled here on December 8. Only three days ago the BJP leadership here realised that Mahesh Joshi, former chief whip of the Congress party, had already booked Amrooton Ka Bagh, the ground near the Rajasthan Assembly, for a family function. The ground is a property disputed between the Jaipur royal family and the State Government, it is presently under a receiver appointed by the Supreme Court. A retired judge, Justice U. N. Bachawat, who lives in Delhi, is the receiver. The ruling party, even after announcing the venue publicly and also printing thousands of posters and invitation cards, did not check whether the venue was actually available for it on December 8. “I did not have any mala fide intention in blocking Amrooton Ka Bagh as I kept checking daily whether the ground was available from November 22 onward. When I was told that it was not booked on November 25, I decided to book it myself depositing a cheque for Rs.50,000 along with an application,” said Mr. Joshi, former MLA from Kishenpole Bazar in Jaipur, said on Thursday. “Yesterday a telephone call came from Kailashnath Bhatt, the spokesperson of the BJP, requesting me to cancel my booking. I told him politely that I was yet to hear from Justice Bachawat’s office,” said Mr. Joshi. “The venue is final and it is Amrooton Ka Bagh. We have already applied for permission and the application has reached Justice Bachawat’s office in Delhi,” said Mr. Kailashnath Bhatt said. He conceded that the party managers had messed up the case by not applying in time. Mr. Bhatt’s confidence in untying the tangle seemingly stems from his personal equation with the Congress men. “Mahesh Joshi is a personal friend and so is C. P. Joshi. I told them that in no way would we let handing over the venue for the BJP function affect their prestige or the prestige of the Congress party,” he said. Now the ground is seemingly open!
