Congress leader files nomination as BJP candidate

Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA: In a dramatic turn of events in Himachal politics on Friday, the Mandi district president of the Congress, D. D. Thakur filed his nomination papers for the coming elections in the State as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate.

Mr. Thakur had been upset for a long time over the Congress ticket having gone to Anil Sharma, son of the veteran Congress leader and former Union Communication Minister Sukh Ram. Earlier he had planned to fight as an independent candidate.

Surprisingly, a number of disgruntled BJP ticket aspirants who were opposing the RSS-backed official party candidate Pravin Sharma have also welcomed the move. Mr. Sharma, who was supported by the State BJP president Jai Ram Thakur, was opposed tooth and nail by some senior BJP leaders in the district. They had even sat on a dharna outside the party office after the announcement and the party was on the brink of a revolt.

In another important move, the BJP has changed its woman candidate, Anita Dhiman, from the Gangath reserved constituency in Kangra.

A Shanta Kumar loyalist, Desraj, has been given the party ticket in place of Ms. Dhiman who was the Block Development Council vice-chairperson. Her supporters after aggressively protesting in Hangwal, where Ms. Dhiman was campaigning, plan to encourage her to fight the election as an independent candidate now.

Meanwhile, the Congress has also changed its candidate, sitting MLA Bodhraj, from Gangath and chosen Krishan Kumar as its new nominee.
