Determined to destroy AIDS

R. Sundaram

Dr.G.Nagarajan

ERODE: Every year this doctor organizes the World AIDS awareness day in Erode. Known as ‘AIDS Doctor’- named so by the social service organisations for his outstanding service to the prevention of AIDS, Dr Nagarajan meticulously visits various schools, colleges and other places to spread his message. And this year too he has arranged for the awareness programme on December 1. “Sometime in 1983, I happened to see a post-operative patient being taken from the operation theatre in a stretcher by three ward boys and a nurse. All of them were wearing gloves. I asked them why they were wearing gloves. They replied that the patient is HIV +Ve " said 78 year old Dr. G. Nagarajan.

He said the ward boys and even qualified nurse were totally ignorant about HIV. He then realised that many people are still in the dark about this deadly disease and it’s mode of spreading.

So since 1984, Dr. Nagarajan has been conducting AIDS awareness seminars and programmes in Erode and other areas.

He goes about meeting the drivers, conductors and people in the slums and enlighten them on AIDS and how to prevent it. He had conducted a number of street plays and rallies to spread awareness on AIDS. Last year he painted AIDS awareness slogans round his body, walked for over more than three kilometers to convey his message.

He also provides counselling to HIV patients.

“Many adolescents are totally unaware of the seriousness of AIDS. This is the age when they are curious to experiment with sex. I have decided to give special attention to teenagers, he says.

Nagarajan is running the Mother Teresa HIV/AIDS Medical Institute and Research Center in the Dhanvantri Hospital, Karungalpalayam.

The ‘AIDS Doctor’ is still pursuing his aim of eradicating AIDS from this country.
