CHANDIGARH: Even as the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal’s coalition partner BJP staked its claim over appointment of at least 30 per cent of the chairpersons to various boards and corporations in Punjab, it has served an ultimatum on the government headed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to notify the constitution of five separate boards to mitigate the problems of industry and trade. If the development at the second meeting of the co-ordination committee is any indication, the BJP seems to have succeeded in extracting major concessions from its senior coalition partner. The Akalis were represented by their working president Sukhbir Singh Badal, secretary-general S. S. Dhindsa, senior Minister Kanwaljit Singh and party general secretary B. S. Bhunder. For the BJP, while the high-profile MP Navjot Singh Sidhu could not make it to the meeting, State unit president Rajinder Bhandari and Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia participated in the meeting. While the top Akali leadership is said to have deliberated to formulate a strategy the previous evening, the BJP in-charge of Punjab affairs Balbir Punj and his deputy Kiran Ghai were closeted with the Chief Minister, without aides, after the deliberations. Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, who described the meeting as very cordial, refused to divulge the details. However, he assured that means were being found to ensure every election promise made to the people was fulfilled within the next six months. He said the next round of deliberations would be held in Delhi on December 10. Talking to reporters here, Mr. Punj disclosed that a sub-committee had been formed under the Chief Minister to examine the various issues related to viability of different public sector undertakings and appointing their chairpersons. With Capt. Kanwaljit Singh and Mr. Kalia representing the Akali Dal and the BJP respectively, the panel is expected to reach some mutually acceptable solution before the government completes one year in office.
