BJP asks SGPC to review decision
Pathankot: The Bharatiya Janata Party, a constituent of Punjab’s coalition Government headed by the Shiromani Akali Dal, on Friday asked the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Comittee (SGPC) to review the installation of Sikh militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s portrait in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.
Senior BJP leader in charge of Punjab party affairs Balbir Punj said crores of Sikhs and other devotees visit the Golden Temple for peace and to seek spiritual blessings of the Gurus and “Bhindranwale’s profile does not match with the holy place”.
The SGPC, which manages the affairs of key Sikh shrines in Punjab, is controlled by the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Bhindranwale was killed in an operation by security forces in June 1984 to flush out militants holed up in Golden Temple complex.
