Suicide by girl alleged
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in Nanmangalam near Tambaram on Thursday. While her neighbours suspect that it is a fall-out of harassment by a special police team, the Pallikaranai police said the girl took the extreme step as she had failed in her X Standard examinations.
Her neighbours said that a special police team came to Nanmangalam and questioned Shanmugham running a petty shop, at around 10 a.m. Shanmugham was reported to have sold lottery tickets and after questioning him, the police team was reported to have made some remarks about his family.
Neighbours said Shanmugham was then taken away by the police and her wife too followed him in an attempt to take him on bail.
Guhapriya, Shanmugham’s daughter, went home around 11 a.m. When her mother returned a little past noon, she noticed her daughter lying unconscious on the floor. The victim had wrung her neck using a dupatta, police said.
However, the Pallikaranai police denied that the suicide was a fall-out of harassment by policemen of the special team.
