Advantage technology Law & order

Mobile phone technology comes handy for the police to track down criminals, writes V.S. Palaniappan

The cellular phone technology has its own set of advantages as well as disadvantages. While criminals misuse cellular phones, the police are using the same to track them down.

A gang hijacked a truck laden with 300 bags of cotton yarn proceeding from Coimbatore to Maharastra. A complaint was preferred about the theft of consignment and the Coimbatore Rural District Police remained clueless for six months.

During a review of pending cases, the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Seema Agrawal, and the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, G. Karthikeyan, formed special teams.

The teams led by Mr.Karthikeyan got hold of some calls received by the truck operator from the gang. The police started tracing the gang based on the mobile numbers from which the calls were made. It was found that the gang was not using the two numbers after hijacking the truck.

Then, the police approached the cellular operators for help. The operators found that the two Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards were used on two particular handsets. The gang used the temporary SIM cards bought with bogus documents for those particular days of crime and abandoned them.

The operators tracked the International Module Equipment Identification (IMIE) number of the handsets. They found that the particular handsets were continuously in use.

Thus, the police found that the truck owner and a three-member gang were involved in the offence, Mr. Karthikeyan pointed out.

The police said that the subscribers should note down the IMIE number of the handset given behind the battery in the phone.

With its help, the operators could trace anybody using a stolen or misplaced handset.
