Thiruvananthapuram: The State government has formed a special team to track and confiscate illicit spirit consignments. Inspector General of Police Rishiraj Singh will head the team. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Crimes, six Superintendents of Police, one Assistant Superintendent of Police, six DySPs and three Circle Inspectors will assist him. The team has been empowered to conduct searches at any premise. The team can take over the investigation of past and current cases registered by the Excise and police departments. An Illicit Spirit Monitoring Cell too has been formed. The Additional Director General of Police, Crimes, Inspector General of Police, Internal Security, and the Additional Excise Commissioners will head the cell. The cell will work in tandem with law enforcers in other States. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has also ordered formation of district-wise special investigation units to investigate spirit cases. The DySP or Assistant Commissioner (Narcotic Cell) will head the SIUs. The Commissioner of Police or District Superintendent of Police will decide which cases have to be investigated.
