Three-day cultural fiesta, ‘Nudisiri’, begins

Staff Correspondent

It attempts at reflecting art

and culture

MOODBIDRI: At the first glance, it was nothing more than a painting of a barren tree. On a closer look, it had a depiction of Mahatma Gandhi hidden in it. If that was not exciting enough, another painting of nature, as it appeared initially, presented Ganesha’s portrait.

These works by G.R. Upadhya of Kavoor, Mangalore, are among the exhibits of books and paintings at “Alva’s Nudisiri”, a three-day convention on Kannada literature and culture, organised by Alva’s Education Foundation, which began here on Friday.

Many of the paintings exhibited by Mr. Upadhya on the third floor of Alva’s College have hidden characters. One canvass has the characters of folklore of coastal belt. He has also painted different characters of Yakshagana separately.

On the second floor, G. Roopa of Karkala has exhibited dolls made of cotton arranged to depict the sequences of Ramayana and some stories of Krishna. Ms. Roopa, a post-graduate, said she had been making the dolls for nearly 30 years now and had exhibited them at various places.

Natraj Aralasurli, cartoonist and college teacher, has exhibited his cartoons among others on the second floor.

Visitors were thronging book-stalls although business was less than expected. A representative of Vasantha Prakashana, Bangalore, said that there was not much demand for books on Friday, probably because it was the first day of the event.

In some stalls, people were buying books on health-related subjects. The exhibition will continue till Sunday.
