Efforts on to bolster Youth Congress

Special Correspondent

’75 per cent of target has been achieved’

MANGALORE: Krishna Byregowda, the newly appointed president of Youth Congress, visited the port city on Friday to take stock of the situation here and bolster the membership-drive.

Addressing presspersons here he said the campaign was successful and already 75 per cent of the target had been achieved.

He had announced that he would enrol 10 lakh members to the party.

Although youth were shying away from politics, particularly after the recent developments in the State, they could change the situation only by being active, he said.

He invited the youth to the Congress by promising to encourage them based on performance, merit and accountability.

When reminded that he had suggested at a public meeting on World Water Day in Bangalore recently that politicians like himself could hardly change society, Mr. Byregowda said he was only trying to point out that all sections of society were to blame for the situation. “I may not have used the right words,” he added.

He said the youth wing would soon have a website, a newsletter of its own, and committees dedicated to issues such as rural, urban, social welfare, women and environment.

The Congress considered those aged between 18 and 35 as youth, he said.

He said he was not in favour of earmarking a specified number of tickets for youth in the forthcoming Assembly elections. “We do not want to limit ourselves,” he said.
