Several former DIC(K) leaders quit their posts in NCP
STRATEGY SESSION: Supporters of Nationalist Congress Party leader K. Karunakaran call on him at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday amidst reports that the veteran leader has expressed his desire to return to the Congress fold. Thiruvananthapuram: A majority of the former Democratic Indira Congress- Karunakaran (DIC-K) leaders and supporters have thrown their weight behind veteran leader K. Karunakaran, setting the stage for parting of ways between the father and son and return of the veteran to the Congress. Those who quit their posts in NCP included Kodoth Govindan Nair (NCP vice-president), Karunakaran Pillai (NCP general secretary) and Ibrahim Kutty Kallar (Nationalist Youth Congress). The former DIC(K) office-bearers, presidents of district committees and feeder organisations who hold various positions in the NCP met at Mr. Karunakaran’s residence here on Friday morning. The meeting turned out to be a parade of support he has. The NCP State office-bearers M.V. Mani, N. Venugopal, Joshy Sebastian, M.T. Padma and Peethambara Kurup attended the meeting. According to Mr. Govindan Nair, presidents of six feeder organisations and three district committees participated. “We will stick to whatever decision Mr. Karunakaran takes,” he said. Those who attended Friday’s meeting would not participate in the NCP State executive meeting convened by party State president K. Muraleedharan. The meeting also decided to convene a convention of Karunakaran supporters on December 10 here. Mr. Kallar, in a separate statement after resigning as Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC) State president, said he would remain steadfast in his support to Mr. Karunakaran and go along with whatever political decisions he might make. He said that NYC office-bearers who supported Mr. Karunakaran would meet on December 7. The leaders who supported Mr. Karunakaran included T.V. Chandramohan, Varghese Mathew and Kondamom Varghese. K.P. Kunhikannan and M.P. Gangadharan preferred to stay put in the NCP, according to sources.
