There are art and craft products on sale 200 artisans from 21 States are exhibiting their crafts
Artful display: Artistes performing on the opening day of the Airtel Bangalooru Habba 2007 at Chitrakala Parishat in Bangalore on Friday. BANGALORE: The 10-day Airtel ‘Bangalooru Habba 2007’ got off to a flying start with the inauguration of Kala Madhyam arts and crafts mela, at the Chitrakala Parishat to the accompaniment of colourful “Dollu Kunita” and Manipuri “Lavara” dance here on Friday. It was inaugurated by K. Lingam, a ‘Dappu’ dance artiste from Telangana in Andhra Pradesh, by lighting a lamp. Speaking on the occasion, Munira Sen, executive director of Kala Madhyam, said the organisation believed that artistes and artisans could be equal partners in development provided middlemen were eliminated. “This is our seventh consecutive year in promoting and empowering folk and tribal communities,” she said. Nearly 200 artisans from 21 States, some of them hailing from remote villages, are exhibiting their arts and crafts for sale through nearly 70 stalls. The range of products includes bamboo crafts, terracotta, handlooms, jewellery, embroidery, jute products, crochets lace, and leather crafts. Prabhakar, president, Chitrakala Parishat; Nandini Alva and Padmini Ravi, trustees of Artistes’ Foundation for Arts; Yatish Mehrotra, chief operating officer, Mobile Services, Airtel-Karnatakawere present.
