He entertains and educates people
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Even at 54, K.M. Lingam performs the dappu (drum) dance, not just to entertain the people but to educate the rural and poor people. He started performing the dance at a young age, just as his parents did.
Mr. Lingam, now a native of Hyderabad, was born at Gaddapaka village in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. He does not make a living out of his vocation; he is a businessman by profession.
“People from Telangana region are migrating to urban areas for jobs. Our traditional arts are vanishing. My concern is to preserve this vanishing art form. I appeal to them through my songs not to give up this art,” Mr. Lingam says. Apart from the “dappu” dance, he is also adept at “Kolatam,” “Telagam” (drum) and tribal dance called “Gondu.” “There are nearly 40 varieties of dance in this art,” he says.
