TAMBARAM: Southern Railway is taking several measures to improve the overall operational ratio, which, at present, is 112 per cent, said General Manager Rakesh Chopra on Thursday.

Speaking at the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Workshop here on Thursday, he said that for every Rs.100 earned, Southern Railway had invested Rs.112. In order to improve the overall operational efficiency of Southern Railway, this ratio had to be brought down to below 100 per cent, he said at a function held to hand over the ISO-9001 2002 certificate to the workshop.

Detailing the measures, he said that cost-effectiveness and value engineering would be adopted to achieve the targets.

“Reliability and cost-effectiveness go hand in hand,” Mr. Rakesh Chopra pointed out.

Lauding the staff at the workshop for the achievement, the official said the norms of ISO-9001 should be institutionalised and should become the ethos at the workplace.

He gave a reward of Rs.25,000 to the workshop.

Mr. Rakesh Chopra inspected the facilities at the workshop, including a ‘mobile radiator suction plant’.

He ordered a cash award of Rs.1,000 each to the three personnel involved in the plant’s design.

Man Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Vipin Jha, Chief Electrical Engineer, Neeraj Kumar Verma, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer, Tambaram, and T.Chandrasekaran, Technical Director of ICRS Management Systems that issued the ISO certification to the workshop, spoke.
