Fishermen don’t budge an inch

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Fishermen from the hamlets off East Coast Road were firm on their stand that they would not allow the government to demolish the road passing through their localities.

A peace committee meeting was held in Kottivakkam on Friday where officials interacted with representatives and leaders of fishermen councils.

(Fishermen have been resisting attempts by the Kancheepuram district administration over the past few days to demolish the road following a Madras High Court order on a public interest litigation).

At the meeting, officials of the Chengalpattu Revenue Division appealed to the fishermen to maintain calm and not to take law in their hands when the government machinery came to discharge its duty and carry out instructions of the Madras High Court. The officials told the representatives that the court had instructed the Kancheepuram district administration to remove the road connecting fishing hamlets between Tiruvanmiyur and Neelankarai. They also made it clear that fishermen organisations had committed a mistake so far by not impleading themselves as respondents in the case.

To this, the fishermen said they had already initiated the process for the same. Senior advocate Nalini Chidambaram would be fighting for their cause, they told officials. The meeting lasted more than three hours.
