VISAKHAPATNAM: The police on Friday resorted to severe lathicharge on Students Federation of India activists, who, for the last four days, had been observing relay fast in front of the collectorate seeking better hostels, scholarships and other facilities, and took around 30 students into custody.

About half-a-dozen students were injured and SFI leader Jagat Roy was shifted to King George Hospital after he fainted. The relay hunger strike camp was removed and the public address system seized.

The students gathered in strength to lay siege to the collectorate as part of the agitation which was taken up after a student staying in the tribal welfare girls hostel died due to diarrhoea and several others had taken ill.

As the students tried to enter the collectorate premises, the police blocked their way and resorted to lathicharge. The students were severely beaten up and about 30 of them were dragged and dumped into a police van.

Action flayed

The lathicharge evoked strong criticism from the CPI (M) and the CPI.

Instead of solving the problems being faced by the students and despite one girl student’s death due to diarrhoea, which explained the poor conditions in the welfare hostels, the government was trying to suppress the just demands and agitation with force, said CPI(M) city secretary K. Lokanadham. He demanded that the government provide more hostels to accommodate all needy students and.grant Rs. 5 lakh ex-gratia to the family of the student who died due to diarrhoea.
