RTC garners profit of Rs. 121 crore in the present fiscal ‘6000 buses need to be replaced in the RTC fleet’ HYDERABAD: Denying media reports that Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy had expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), a senior official on Friday claimed that under the chairmanship of V. Dinesh Reddy, the largest transport organisation in the world had made rapid strides. Executive Director (T & C) A. Nageswara Rao in a press release issued here said for the first time in 10 years, APSRTC registered a net profit of Rs. 40.59 crore during 2006-07 and Rs. 121 crore in the current financial year till October-end. He said that fleet utilisation touched a new high of 99.40 per cent during this year, which was highest in the country. Listing out various achievements, he said Pallevelugu, newly designed ordinary buses were introduced to improve the quality of rural travel. Similarly, Meghdoot, newly designed buses comparable to Volvo buses with lesser fare were introduced. Other initiatives by the APSRTC included display of passenger friendly destination boards, fare stage poles at 1,422 stages in rural areas, introduction of eco-friendly 63 CNG buses in Vijayawada city, plans to commercially exploit vacant corporation lands and issuance of combined MMTS general bus tickets. Action has been initiated to introduce 100 semi low floor buses, 50 vestibule buses and 50 upgraded metro deluxe buses in city with LED destination boards, Mr. Nageswara Rao said. Demand for new busesThe Staff and Workers Federation (SWF) of the APSRTC, affiliated to the CITU, on Friday demanded that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy permit the corporation to buy new buses.In a press release, SWF president M.N. Reddy and general secretary R. Lakshmaiah said that at last count, at least 6,000 buses of the corporation’s 18,000-odd-strong fleet needed to be replaced. The management had initially planned on procuring about 2,000 new buses in the current fiscal and had even placed orders for 1,000. Mr. Lakshmaiah referred to Thursday’s meeting, at which Dr. Reddy had lauded the workers for their efforts in turning the corporation around. They said that they did not need appreciation but concrete steps that would help improve the lot of workers. Mr. Lakshmaiah expressed concern over the suicide of a worker in Tuni depot in East Godavari district on November 21 .
