Guarantee cards given with free colour TV sets: Ponmudy

VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy gave away free colour television sets to 1,074 beneficiaries in Kozhipattu and Palliyanthur falling within the Khaanai panchayat union near here on Thursday.
Mr. Ponmudy said that guarantee cards were also given along with the sets to enable the beneficiaries carry out repairs, if any, at the designated service centres.
Of the 51 panchayats in the panchayat union, TV sets have been given to all the people listed in 15 panchayats — seven in Villupuram Assembly segment and eight in Mugaiyur segment.
The remaining panchayats will be covered in phases, Mr. Ponmudy said. Both the panchayats had been brought under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and allocated Rs.20 lakh each for undertaking development works.
Of the allocation, Rs.10 lakh had been earmarked for the maintenance of a tank at Palliyanthur.
The remaining funds would be utilised in improving basic amenities such as roads, construction of additional classrooms and so on.
Norms relaxed
The government had relaxed the norms for old age pension. Henceforth all those who were 65 years old and living below the poverty line would get the assistance, regardless of having heirs, Mr. Ponmudy said.
